VR Transpoint to expand operations in Kouvola

VR Transpoint's warehousing terminal in Kouvola's logistics area Tehola will be expanded. The storage space of Cargo East Terminal - specialising in Eastern exports - will be enlarged by around 16 000 m2 which more than doubles its current surface area.

The current terminal - completed in 2004 - has 11 500 m2 of warehousing and office space. Due to increasing good volumes additional space has been leased from external parties.

– Our biggest customer is UPM, which uses 90 per cent of the current terminal's capacity. The key factor in the decision to expand the terminal was their decision to invest in a new product to be produced by Kymi factory. The markets for this product are in the east, says the head of VR Group Logistics, Senior Vice President Rolf Jansson.

We want to bring all warehousing operations under the same roof. The terminal will have 15 000 m2 of new space and 800 m2 of office space which will house all VR Transpoint's mass goods operations in Kouvola. Moreover, new tracks will be laid at the terminal.

Cargo East Terminal will mainly process forest industry products exported to Russia and CIS countries. Additionally, small consignments imported from Russia - chiefly recycled paper bales and raw material for the industry.

The operational concept includes a comprehensive service from the factory to the destination. The products will be transported from the factory to the terminal by road vehicles and domestic railway wagons. Products are then shipped from the terminal by road vehicles or railway wagons. In addition, the intermediate storage services include the processing of goods, warehouse accounting, forwarding and customs clearance.

– With the expansion we seek greater business volumes, a wider customer base, alternative solutions for eastern markets and comprehensive solutions combining VR Transpoint's rail and road transports, says Jansson.

The expansion of the terminal has entered the planning stage. The goal is to complete the construction work at the end of the summer of 2013.
